President's Message

Greater Scranton’s current evolution is gratifying. An educated and enterprising work force lies at the center of our local economy and holds the future of our area. An ambitious community vision, built around education and technology, has been forged with community organizations, the Chamber and local, state, and federal officials. Local technology-based companies, on the cutting-edge of the nation’s industry, are serving a key role while our colleges and universities serve as catalysts in diversifying our economic future, making strong investments in human capital and developing a knowledge-based workforce.

Specialized higher education is indeed emerging as a vital component to economic growth. The addition of The Commonwealth Medical College and the Marywood University School of Architecture will provide new educational and professional opportunities as well as spur economic spin-offs, creating a need for housing, fostering entrepreneurship and opening doors to a sustainable economic future for the greater Scranton area.

As the economic landscape of greater Scranton evolves, the Chamber and its partners continue to strive to meet the needs of the community while serving the best interests of businesses. Projects facilitated by the Scranton Lackawanna Industrial Building Company (SLIBCO), such as the Valley View Business Park and Mount Pleasant Corporate Center, serve as key components to our evolving economy. SLIBCO/LIFE has completed more than 350 major development projects, creating 25,000 jobs and $632 million in local real estate investment. Groups such as The Scranton Plan and MetroAction, Inc. are also working together with community leaders and new organizations, such as the NEPA Venture Partnership, to promote entrepreneurship and business expansion.

In the midst of change, our greatest asset remains the unparalleled work ethic of those who call the region home. More than 500 volunteers from all over greater Scranton are serving as mentors for new local businesses and as spokespersons for the future, striving to promote the innovative climate that exists in Lackawanna County and to encourage entrepreneurs to look at us as a great place to build their businesses. The Rediscover Scranton, POWER! Scranton and Lackawanna County Innovation Starts Here initiatives are prime examples of how public and private partnerships enable valuable civic accomplishments. These civic partnerships serve to enhance our superior quality of life.

Yes, greater Scranton is evolving and improving. There is no better example of the dedication, hard work and leadership within our region than our more than 2,200 members of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce. These qualities, combined with strong public/private partnerships, a continued investment in new industries and support from programs of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce and other organizations dedicated to the economic sustainability of our region, provide a solid foundation for generations of future citizens in a vibrant, prosperous community.
