The Board of Directors of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce has adopted the 2008/2009 Program of Work.

Communications

MISSION: "To alert members, Lackawanna County, and the global community to the Chamber’s development services and community programs through news coverage, publications, promotional events, and the Internet."

NEW...Redesign the Chamber web site to provide better visuals and more interactive features.

NEW...Broaden our reach to Chamber members through increased [e-briefs] subscribers.

NEW...Promote the “Purchasing Power, Let’s Take it Home” theme with the launch of the Buy Local initiative.

Finance

Mission: "To maintain and enhance the financial integrity of The Greater Scranton Chamber of Commerce and all of its affiliations."

...Continue the campaign to increase awareness of SIDCo’s working capital loan program to the Chamber membership and to businesses within Lackawanna County.

Industrial Development

Mission: "To create and retain jobs by developing real estate and obtain incentive financing for businesses."

NEW...Identify a developer and assist in the master planning of an anchor tenant for Phase II of the Valley View Business Park.

NEW...Identify large industrial sites and assist a developer in master planning and developing a new industrial park.

...Complete the evaluation of developing office sites within the Mount Pleasant Corporate Center.

...Substantially complete the construction on the next phase of the Valley View Business Park.

...Complete the infrastructure design and engineering studies to develop the Archbald Business Park.

...Identify and obtain the resources necessary to develop a technology/accelerator facility within the Jessup Small Business Center.

Leadership Lackawanna

Mission: "To enhance the leadership skills of the area's emerging leaders and to introduce them to the challenges facing Lackawanna County so that they can better serve the community through volunteer activities."

NEW...Ensure the successful development of the newly merged Board of Directors by encouraging active participation, from each of the board committees, in all facets of Leadership Lackawanna.

NEW...Launch and promote the recently created Leadership Lackawanna website.

NEW...Develop a standardized process to review financial reports and scholarship funds.

NEW...Develop and implement an end-of-session discussion panel to evaluate the 2007/2008 program.

NEW...Utilize alumni volunteers to foster teamwork and create a greater awareness of the issues facing Greater Scranton/Lackawanna County by incorporating class projects into the 2008/2009 program year.

ONGOING

...Continue the involvement of Leadership Lackawanna Alumni by maintaining the database, ensuring new volunteer opportunities and arranging various events and activities.  In addition, continue to oversee Leadership Lackawanna News and present the annual “Leader of the Year” award in order to promote and foster community leadership.

...Introduce new area administrators/professionals and their spouses/guests to Lackawanna County through the Executive Program.

...Continue community involvement of Leadership Lackawanna Alumni by arranging activities, such as the art auction, holiday party, baseball game and educational seminars; publish “Leadership Lackawanna News”; and recognize the “Leader of the Year” Award to promote and foster community leadership.

...Utilize the experience of our community leading alumni in the Advisory Committee Program.

Mission: "To attract industry, to promote new capital investments, and to create and retain jobs."

...Fulfill a comprehensive marketing program that includes the annual goals: 83 sales calls, 67 prospect companies for local tours, $50 million in new capital investment and 1,600 jobs in Lackawanna County through 14 business/relocation expansion projects. Continue job retention efforts via the Pennsylvania Business Retention and Expansion Program.

...Expand the Rediscover Scranton program to include database       development, volunteer training, marketing and community                      awareness.

...Enhance Scranton Plan events by the implementation of new and   innovative marketing approaches. 

...Pursue Wall Street West prospecting and grant opportunities          through WIRED Outreach efforts and Penn’s Northeast marketing.

Skills in Scranton

Mission: "To create, advocate, and nurture business, education and community partnerships which address educational and workforce opportunities for our students and community."

NEW...Create a business-education consortium to promote career awareness programs in financial and information technology fields in collaboration with the Wall Street West project.

...Create career awareness programs in electronics through implementation of the Commonwealth’s “Connecting Today’s Youth to the Careers of Tomorrow” grant in collaboration with the Scranton School District, Valley View School District, Lakeland School District, FutureConnect.org and the Lackawanna County Workforce Investment Board.

...Promote career awareness programs in electronics and healthcare to 7th-12th grade students.

...Facilitate the retention of our 18–35 year old population and the development of skilled workers through the Work&Play in Northeast PA effort.

...Build regional partnerships between business and education through programs such as the Computer Contest and Community Reading Day.

...Encourage and foster the development of leadership skills in students from the junior class of secondary schools by conducting "Tomorrow's Leaders Today".

Small Business and Community Development

Mission: "To promote small business growth and community development in northeastern Pennsylvania."

NEW...Investigate the feasibility of developing the Women's Business Center initiative to enhance the development of entrepreneurs in northeastern Pennsylvania.

NEW...Conduct a roundtable forum with representatives from the business and educational communities to foster the development of  Downtown Scranton as a destination location for local college students.

NEW...Complete a comprehensive market analysis and plan for MetroAction's small business financing and development programs through the implementation of the CDFI fund technical assistance grant.

...Conduct an annual forum to address diversity within the small business community in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Transportation

Mission: "To identify and promote transportation infrastructure to best serve Lackawanna County and its potential for growth."

NEW...Plan and implement priority projects identified by the regional Strategic Teams Accelerating Regional Stimuli (STARS) Logistic and Transportation initiative.

NEW...Assist PennDOT in securing additional funding through the Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Valley View Business Park Roadway project.

NEW...Participate in a tri-state feasibility study to investigate the viability of a new business and commuter rail link serving Binghamton, Syracuse, New York and points west to the Chicago market.          

ONGOING

...Work with PennDOT to complete the design and start construction on the Valley View Business Park access road.

...Work with the PA Northeast Regional Railroad Authority to secure a Bi-State funding agreement pursuant to receiving a favorable national funding rating from the Federal Transit Administration.
