Outreach – Center for Community Resources and its Annual Toyland Workshop

Outreach – Center for Community Resources recently held its annual Toyland Workshop at its Seventh Avenue Center in Scranton. Outreach received tremendous support from local donors, businesses, and organizations. These donations provided an array of toys, pajamas, books, and gifts for Outreach families to give to their children on Christmas morning. Families are also provided grocery gift cards to help with the cost of a holiday meal to share.

Students at Geisinger College of Health Sciences, and Holy Cross High School each held toy donation drives at their respective campuses. At the same time, Johnson College employees held a drive at their institution to collect gifts. Each drive was very successful, and Outreach is incredibly grateful to each school and all donors for their generosity.

It is truly a marvel to see the toddler playroom at the Outreach Seventh Avenue Center overflowing with toys and filled with the spirit of the season’s generosity each and every year. Many of Outreach’s families live below the Federal Poverty Level, and the holidays are often an extra financial burden. Adults come into the Outreach Center and shop for their children, allowing them to choose the toys and books for their children. The Toyland Workshop helps alleviate some of that burden and helps create a bit of Christmas magic.

The Mighty Oak Awards honor pillars in Northeastern Pennsylvania for their leadership and contributions to the community. This year’s event will recognize two individuals who exemplify Outreach’s mission: Attorney Tobey Oxholm III and Ms. Anne Quinn Butler.

Attorney Carl “Tobey” Oxholm III will be awarded the Mighty Oak Award for helping individuals receive pardons as the creator of the Pardon Project of Pennsylvania. Atty. Oxholm has worked with Outreach to expand the Pardon Project to Lackawanna County. He graduated from Harvard Law and the Kennedy School of Government in 1979 and previously served as Chief Deputy Solicitor for the City of Philadelphia and General Counsel for Drexel University. He lives in Gouldsboro with his wife of forty-six years, Kim.

Ms. Anne Quinn Butler is this year’s Beth Beh Community Spirit Award. Ms. Butler has been a part of the Outreach community for two decades. She previously was employed at Outreach as the Life Skills Program Manager at the Lackawanna County Prison. Since stepping down from her role, she has continued volunteering at Outreach by serving on various committees and is a Past President of the Board of Directors. She enjoys spending time with grandchildren and children in her free time, traveling, and gardening.

Beth Beh Community Spirit Award recognizes and honors an individual or group with a long-standing devotion to community service through education, volunteer work, and citizen connections. Beth Beh founded the Women’s Employment Program (WEP) in 1986, the flagship program of the Employment Opportunity Training Center (EOTC), now Outreach. She devoted her life to developing and expanding community services that focused on single mothers and children in the region and provided mentorship to childcare professionals.

The Mighty Oak Awards will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, live music, and basket raffles. Tickets are $125 and can be purchased online at www.outreachworks.org or by contacting Lori Ryan, Community Outreach & Resource Development Manager, via email at lryan@outreachworks.org or by calling 570-558-7565.

Outreach- Center for Community Resources Receives Community Needs Grant

Outreach – Center for Community Resources received a grant for $12,000 from the Scranton Area Community Foundation in June of this year for Outreach Evidence-based Early Childhood Education as part of the 2023 Spring Community Needs Grant Cycle.

Outreach offers evidence-based home visiting programs for parents and their children. The early childhood education programs focus on child development and school readiness for families with children prenatal to age 3. Services focus on positive parent-child interactions, school readiness, and overall family well-being. Outreach parenting programs allow parents to gain the skills to implement positive parenting techniques that result in improved behavioral outcomes for their children and connect them to a social network of other parents.

Today the Scranton Area Community Foundation holds and manages a variety of funds from individuals, organizations, and corporations. Through these gifts, the Foundation responds to community needs and has provided grants to support regional nonprofits.

Outreach- Center for Community Resources Receives Donations from Local Donors

Outreach – Center for Community Resources received a generous donation of toys from local donors, including Holy Cross High School, Johnson College, the Kiwanis Club of Scranton, Covenant Presbyterian Church Women’s Group, and Bret and Sarah Naugle. The donated toys will allow Outreach families to pick out gifts to give to their children on Christmas morning as part of Outreach’s annual Toyland Workshop.

Outreach supports families experiencing adverse life events. For many of these families, the additional costs of the holiday season can be burdensome. Outreach seeks to alleviate some of this stress with help from local organizations and donors.

Each year, Outreach’s Toyland Workshop provides families with much-needed support during the holiday season and a little Christmas magic. Outreach families are welcome to “shop” the workshop, which provides every child with a toy, a book, and a warm pair of pajamas. Donated toys and pajamas are categorized by age and size, allowing caregivers to select the perfect present for their child. Additionally, caregivers are provided with a grocery gift card to assist with purchasing food for a holiday meal.

Outreach is grateful to the many individuals, families, and organizations who purchased toys or pajamas for local children. This event would not be possible without the generosity of others in the community. Through this generosity, the Northeastern Pennsylvania community has helped advance Outreach’s mission of family stability and economic self-sufficiency.
