Allied Services Awarded Grant from Robert H. Spitz Foundation Allied Services Foundation, on behalf of the John P. Moses Esq Pediatric Rehabilitation Centers, is a recipient of a grant from the Robert H. Spitz Foundation for the 2024 Grant Cycle. The grant awarded in the amount of $12,500 will assist with breaking the cycle of poverty through increased access to therapy services for underprivileged children with disabilities across northeastern Pennsylvania. Administered by the Scranton Area Community Foundation, the Robert H, Spitz Foundation funds initiatives and programs serving the residents of Lackawanna County and surrounding counties in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Outreach Hosts Allied Services Career Event Allied Services Integrated Health System and Outreach – Center for Community Resources will host a career event on January 8, 2025, from 11 AM – 1 PM at the Outreach LEAD (Lead, Educate and Develop) Center in Scranton. The address is 431 North 7th Avenue, Scranton, PA. This event will feature on-site management who will be able to discuss current career opportunities available at Allied Services. Career opportunities available include nursing, mental health services, and support services. Allied Services does provide paid training opportunities for those who qualify.

Odin is currently in need of immediate rehoming and medical attention after the recent passing of his owner. Odin, a friendly dog who has never been to a veterinarian and is not vaccinated, has developed a rash on his back and legs. His family, located in Nanticoke, PA, is unable to provide the necessary care or financial support for his medical needs. While the Luzerne County SPCA has generously offered assistance with food, the family is looking for help in securing a caretaker, foster, or permanent home for Odin as soon as possible. The family is willing to transport Odin to any location in the NEPA region and is seeking any available resources to cover his care and rehoming fees. Financial assistance is available to offset adoption or care costs for those able to help. Allied Services Celebrates Hospice Star Volunteer of 2023 Allied Services Hospice & Palliative Care has named Charlene Cardwell of Mill City, PA, the Hospice Star Volunteer of 2023 in a heartwarming celebration of dedication and service. This inaugural award, marking the first of what will become an annual tradition, was presented at the Volunteer Recognition Celebration held at Arcaro and Genell in Old Forge. Charlene, whose journey with hospice care began in a deeply personal manner following the loss of her husband who was a patient of the health system’s hospice service, has been a beacon of support and compassion for nearly two years. Her firsthand experience with the care and support provided by the hospice inspired her to give back, leading her to become an administrative volunteer. Her commitment to the organization goes beyond typical volunteer duties. Charlene has been instrumental in supporting our veterans through organizing recognition packages as a token of gratitude for their service. In a touching display of her dedication, she also personally crocheted red, white, and blue afghans for the veterans in our inpatient hospice units, providing comfort and warmth in their moments of need. Four Allied Services Clinicians Earn Specialist Certification in Treating Parkinson’s Disease Four members of the therapy team at Allied Services Luger Scranton Rehab Center recently earned an advanced certification for the treatment of Parkinson’s Disease. Stacey Williams, PT, DPT, CNDT, Sondra Morgan, PT, DPT, MHA, Dawn Van Horn, PT, MS, and Laurie Griggs, PTA, all earned the PWR!Moves® Certification. Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurologic disorder. It affects motor planning and cognitive regions in the brain. Recent advances in basic and clinical science research suggest exercise and learning approaches may protect, repair, and optimize function in persons with Parkinson’s disease (PD). Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!) is an approach that targets the multiple motor, sensory, cognitive, and emotional symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease. The PWR!Moves® Certification teaches the theory and practice of utilizing dynamic moves during therapy to help patients with Parkinson’s improve fitness, counteract their PD symptoms, and increase their daily activity. PWR!Moves® is just one of the treatment protocols provided at Allied Services outpatient rehab centers in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
Allied Services Clinician Earns Advanced Certification in Vestibular Rehabilitation Allied Services‘ Kori Wood, DPT, recently earned the Advanced Vestibular Physical Therapist Certification (AVPT) from the University of Pittsburgh. The AVPT Certification is a post-professional certification program for physical therapists who want to become experts in vestibular rehabilitation. Wood completed rigorous coursework and demonstrated clinical competency skills to achieve the advanced certification. Vestibular rehabilitation is a type of physical therapy commonly used for conditions such as vertigo and labyrinthitis that focuses on improving the relationship between the inner ear, brain, eyes, muscles, and nerves. The therapy can also reduce the risk of falling and improve balance, body strength, and the patient’s ability to stabilize vision. Wood, who is a Montrose native, joined Allied Services in 2005. She currently treats patients at Allied Services Luger Scranton Rehab Center and has extensive experience in treating balance and vestibular disorders, back and neck pain, and orthopedic injuries and conditions.
Allied Services Welcomes Back RN Allied Services Integrated Health System proudly welcomed back Paula Munley, RN. Munley will serve as Director of Nursing at Allied Services Scranton Transitional Rehab Unit. Located within the non-profit’s inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Scranton, the Transitional Rehab Unit provides intensive rehabilitation and nursing to short-stay patients. The Transitional Rehab Unit consistently earns the highest industry ratings, including US News & World Report’s Best Nursing Home award for Short-Term Rehabilitation. Munley has over 30 years of experience in nursing, having worked extensively in inpatient rehab and long-term care settings at Allied Services and other area facilities. A Pittston native, Munley earned a graduate degree from Penn State University.
Allied Services Partners with Local Church to Support Injured Ukrainian Soldiers Allied Services partnered with Father Myron Myronyuk, Pastor of St.Vladimir Ukrainian Catholic Church in Scranton, to donate rehab equipment and medical supplies to benefit injured Ukrainian soldiers. The donated equipment will be part of a shipment of supplies heading to Ukraine thanks to the efforts of St. Vladimir Ukrainian Church and its friends. On Thursday, January 25, 2024, a shipping container arrived from New Jersey at the warehouse at Allied Services in Taylor for loading. Allied Services, a nationally-ranked non-profit rehabilitation provider, donated a significant volume of lightly used rehabilitation equipment including stationary bikes, treadmills, and parallel bars. The donation, estimated to be in the tens of thousands of dollars, also included hospital beds, gowns, walkers, wheelchairs, and other supplies. The donation will assist rehabilitation centers working with Ukrainian soldiers injured since the war started in 2022.
