Johnson College Hazleton Now Enrolling for Medical Assistant Course Johnson College’s Continuing Education program is now enrolling students in its Medical Assistant course at its satellite campus, Johnson College at the CAN DO Training Center in Hazle Township. Johnson College Now Enrolling in Continuing Education Welding Courses Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program is enrolling students in its Fundamentals of Welding and Intermediate Welding courses at the Scranton campus. The Fundamentals course will begin on May 16, 2024, and can be taken on its own or followed by any one Intermediate course including Shielded Metal Arc (Stick), Gas Metal Arc (MIG), or Gas Tungsten Arc (TIG). The Fundamentals of Welding course teaches the basics of major welding processes. Students learn equipment set-up as well as basic techniques and safety for oxy-fuel welding and cutting, Stick, TIG, and MIG welding. Additional lectures are given on basic metallurgy, welding codes, nondestructive examination, and welding symbols. Intermediate courses build upon specific welding processes, working towards plate certification to a common welding code. The fundamentals course fee is $1,870 and includes a PPE kit. Intermediate course fees are $2,750 and include certification testing fees. The courses can be bundled for a reduced cost of $4,251. Class A CDL Driver Training The Continuing Education Class A CDL Driver Training is held in partnership with Ancora Education and will begin on April 1, running Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Students will learn to inspect and operate tractor-trailers and to assume driver responsibilities on the road and at pickup/delivery points. Emphasis is placed on vehicle inspections, defensive driving, range maneuvers, motor carrier safety regulations (DOT 380 -397 and a certificate for entry-level drivers), trip planning, cargo handling, size/weight laws, general maintenance procedures, hours of service, and accident prevention. Participants in this 160-hour program can obtain their CDL in as little as four weeks. The course complies with the new Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) rules established by the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration (FMCSA), which went into effect in February 2022. Johnson College News Johnson College $5 Million Comprehensive Capital Campaign for Campus Enhancements Johnson College publicly launched its new, $5 million comprehensive, five-year capital campaign, “Innovation at Work,” during a community kickoff event on Wednesday, June 8, where it revealed plans for major campus-wide projects. The “Innovation at Work” campaign consists of four components that will create an environment for growth and success: the construction of a new gateway building, which will become the official entrance to the campus and include new lab and classroom space; the expansion of Woolworth Hall which houses on-campus lab space for programs including Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning and Electrical Construction Technology; the creation of a Transportation Education Center; and support of the College’s Annual Fund and student scholarships. A crucial catalyst for the “Innovation at Work” campaign is a $1 million contribution from Ideal T. Saldi, a Johnson College alum from the class of 1949, and his wife, Frances Saldi, alongside other funders who have invested in the College. The Saldis’ gift, announced in April before the college community, is the largest gift from a Johnson College alum to date and will have a lasting impact on the school, and its students. To honor this gift, the new, state-of-the-art gateway building will be named Ideal Saldi Hall. “At the heart of this campaign is our students. It is focused on helping them be successful,” President and CEO, Dr. Katie Leonard said. “We strive to carry forward Orlando S. Johnson’s vision of providing a trade school to the region where young men and women can learn useful trades that will enable them to make an honorable living and become contributing members of society.” As the world of technology continues to change rapidly, Johnson College must change with it. Johnson College Receives EITC Contribution in Support of STEM Outreach and Industry Fast Track Programs Recently, Johnson College received a $5,000 EITC contribution from Pride Mobility in support of the College’s STEM Outreach and Industry Fast Track Programs. Pride Mobility’s contribution to Johnson College is part of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The program offers businesses a tax credit for supporting state-approved educational improvement programs. Johnson College is approved to accept EITC contributions in support of its STEM outreach and Industry Fast Track programs. Through its STEM Outreach, Johnson College utilizes its experience in providing industry-focused, hands-on technical education to expand its outreach to elementary, middle, and high school students. The outreach raises awareness of the benefits of STEM education and the possibilities of achieving economic independence through employment in a STEM career field. Johnson College’s Industry Fast Track program offers high school students from participating area school districts an opportunity to enroll simultaneously in secondary and post-secondary coursework at Johnson College. The course meets state requirements for high school graduation while providing college-level courses. Students remain enrolled full-time at their high school while attending classes at Johnson College.
Marywood University to Offer Professional Continuing Education Program on “Moving Beyond COVID-19” Marywood University is offering a full-day, in-person continuing education session for educators, counselors, psychologists, social workers, and addictions counselors on “Moving Beyond COVID-19” on Friday, April 1, from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at Nazareth Student Center on the University’s campus. The program, presented by nationally renowned psychologist David Palmiter, Ph.D., ABPP, will address how to adjust and collectively move forward from the pandemic-induced anxiety and stress that have led to acute needs for mental health services. COVID’s long shadow has heightened the pandemic’s socioeconomic inequities, leading to additional psychological, economical, and social harm. This fast-paced, science-based, and practical training will focus on understanding the key concepts of what causes collective trauma, as well as what people can do to practice gratitude, promote resilience, cultivate hope, and restore happiness in their professional and personal missions. Dr. Palmiter, a full professor of psychology at Marywood University, is a board certified practicing psychologist and an examiner for the American Board of Professional Psychology. He is a past president of the Pennsylvania Psychological Association (PPA), and a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, PPA, and the American Academy of Clinical Psychologists. Additionally, Dr. Palmiter has over three dozen professional publications, has delivered over 200 continuing education workshops across the country, and has over 350 media credits (e.g., The New York Times, CNN, The Washington Post). He has won three national awards for his writing, a state award for his media work, and a university award for his work within psychology. The OBD II computer monitors a vehicle’s emission control systems in real-time and is capable of informing a motorist or technician of a systemic issue the moment it occurs. The system operates through a series of indicator lights, drive cycles, trouble codes, and readiness monitors. During an inspection, an emission analyzer scan tool plugs into the diagnostic connector attached to the OBDII computer and communicates with the vehicle. The OBDII computer relays to the scan tool whether it has discovered errors in the emission control systems. The emission analyzer then determines whether the car is operating in compliance with emission standards.
