Friends of the Poor – Back to School Fundraiser

Friends of the Poor is once again doing a Back 2 School Drive to distribute free school supplies to students across Lackawanna County.

This year, we are opting for an Amazon Wishlist to accept donations. Since most public schools require clear backpacks, lunch boxes, and water bottles, these items are of priority.

As always, any and all donations are greatly appreciated.

Hospice of The Sacred Heart Hosts Camp Healing Hearts

Industry expert available to discuss grief education

Hospice of the Sacred Heart hosts Camp Healing Hearts

This event is a five-day camp experience to provide grief education to children ages 8 to 14 who have experienced the death of a loved one. Camp is designed to provide campers exposure to the arts, giving them the opportunity to develop healthy ways to express themselves and process their emotions. Trained bereavement counselors and members of the regional arts community work together to assist the campers in finding comfortable outlets to share their grief.  Jennifer Seechock, Hospice of the Sacred Heart Director of Counseling Services, will be available throughout the week for media interviews.

The five-day camp is free and is made up of instructional sessions in various art platforms.  This year’s theme is Pure Imagination. Bereavement counselors will be available throughout the week if any campers or family members require individual support.

Northeast Title and Tag to Host Peeling Plate Rally

Northeast Title & Tag, in cooperation with State Representative Bridget Kosierowski, is pleased to announce the Peeling Plate Rally, an initiative aimed at streamlining the replacement process for illegible, peeling license plates within our community. Our proactive approach involves assisting individuals in completing the necessary paperwork more efficiently than if done independently and mailing the forms to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).
In support of the Pennsylvania State Police, there will be an officer on-site to inspect peeling plates and sign off on the required forms, certifying the plate as illegible. The forms will be provided on-site to individuals seeking to replace their peeling plates.

Additional Details Required from Participants:
– Copy of valid vehicle registration card and Driver’s License/Photo ID
– Both owners must be present with valid ID if two individuals are listed as vehicle owners
– For vehicles registered in a company’s name, an authorization letter allowing the present individual to sign on behalf of the company is required, along with the aforementioned documentation.

Once all necessary information is collected and confirmed, Northeast Title & Tag will handle the paperwork and messenger it to PennDOT for processing. Once processed, the new plates will be sent back to Northeast Title & Tag’s office for customer retrieval at their convenience.

During the Peeling Plate Rally, Northeast Title & Tag is waiving ALL SERVICE FEES associated with this type of transaction. It is important to note that PennDOT will replace the plates free of charge, resulting in no cost whatsoever for customers.

The Wright Center Announces Monthly ‘Walk with a Doc’ Events

The Wright Center for Community Health invites residents of Luzerne, Lackawanna, and Wayne counties to put on their walking shoes and take a step towards improved health by joining one of the three regional, monthly Walk with a Doc events.

This doctor-led initiative brings health care providers and community members together for an invigorating walk with doctors and other health care professionals. Participants will have the opportunity to exercise, engage with health care professionals, and connect with new people.

The Walk with a Doc event in Lackawanna County is held on the first Saturday of each month at 9 a.m., now at its new location at Nay Aug Park, 500 Arthur Ave., Scranton. Walkers should gather at the park’s main entrance. The upcoming event is on Aug. 3.

In Wayne County, the Walk with a Doc event takes place on the second Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. at the Lacawac Sanctuary, 94 Sanctuary Road, Lake Ariel. All walks are a collaboration with Lacawac Sanctuary and AllOne Foundation & Charities. The next event is on Aug. 10.

The Luzerne County Walk with a Doc event is scheduled for the third Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. at Kirby Park, 280 Market St., Kingston. The next event is on Aug. 17, with walkers meeting at the park’s main entrance.

These doctor-led group walks are open to the community, accommodating people of all ages and fitness levels. Participation is free, and no pre-registration is necessary.

Walk with a Doc is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring communities through movement and conversation. According to the American Heart Association, walking for just 30 minutes a day can improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels, help maintain a healthy body weight, and reduce the risk of obesity, enhance mental well-being, and lower the risk of osteoporosis.

The Wright Center for Community Health, based in Scranton, operates 10 primary and preventive care practices in Northeast Pennsylvania, including a mobile medical and dental vehicle called Driving Better Health. Their practices provide integrated, whole-person primary health services, offering medical, dental, and behavioral health care, along with community-based addiction treatment and recovery services, all in one location for patient convenience.
