Lackawanna College to Host Kyle Richard On Thursday, January 27 at noon, the Lackawanna College Student Wellness Program will host guest speaker Kyle Richard at the Peoples Security Bank Theater, 501 Vine St., Scranton. Richard will share his story with students to promote active bystanders and speak about violence prevention awareness. The Kyle Richard event is part of Lackawanna College’s “It’s On Us Lackawanna” project, which was funded by a grant award from Governor Tom Wolf’s 2020-2021 It’s On Us PA grant program.
Boback Holds Joint Veterans Service Officer Day at the Capitol Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming), majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, announces Veterans Service Officer Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in coordination with the House and Senate Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness committees. The event is being held in conjunction with the five major veterans service organizations, the American Legion, AMVETS, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Vietnam Veterans of America, along with the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. “As the majority chairman of the House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee, I am grateful to host this event at the Capitol with my House and Senate counterparts,” said Boback. “Our veterans deserve our support and Veterans Service Officer Day at the Capitol focuses on the free services available to all veterans across the Commonwealth.” This event is open to all downtown state employees and the general public. Boback Announces Patriot Day Ceremony Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming), in conjunction with the Tunkhannock Area School District is hosting a Patriot Day ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of September 11, 2001. The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Tunkhannock Area High School Football field.“As we have reached the 20th anniversary of those horrific attacks, it is imperative that we continue to honor and remember every single life we lost in the name of freedom,” said Boback. “I am honored that I am able to hold this event in conjunction with the Tunkhannock Area School District to offer the community the opportunity to spend time with one another on this Patriot Day. Twenty years ago, we vowed to never forget the 2,977 lives that we lost on that Tuesday morning, and I am grateful that our town is ensuring that we never forget.” The ceremony will include the Post 457 Dennis Strong American Legion Colors, rifle salute and TAPS, Tunkhannock Area High School brass quintet and a ceremonial bell ringing with the Triton Fire Company.
Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA to Host Annual Mix and Mingle Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA is hosting its largest fundraiser of the year at Glen Oak Country Club, 250 Oakford Road Clarks Summit, PA on September 23, 2021 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Meals on Wheels Community Services of NEPA will present two awards this year. The Fifth Annual Founder’s Award for Philanthropy will be awarded to Clarence Baltrusaitis on behalf of NET Credit Union. “We are so excited to honor Clarence and NET Credit Union,” said Kristen L. Kosin, Executive Director. “NET Credit Union is a true champion of our area. It’s amazing how their employees donate their time, expertise and generosity to help agencies and organizations throughout our area.” The second award presented will be the Elaine F. Shepard Award for Exceptional Volunteerism. “Elaine F. Shepard is an extraordinary example of service to the community. This award will honor Katie Gilmartin. La Festa Italiana Set for Labor Day Weekend in Scranton La Festa Italiana is back! After the event was cancelled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, La Festa is returning and will be held Labor Day weekend (Friday through Monday, September 3-6, 2021) on Courthouse Square in the heart of downtown Scranton, Pa. Hours are Friday, 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The festival committee is collaborating with the Lackawanna County Commissioners and the Mayor of Scranton’s Office to plan the event. COVID vaccines, masks and hand sanitizers will be available at no charge. A variety of vendors will be offering great Italian food and other items, and continuous live entertainment will be featured. There is no admission charge. This year’s presenting sponsor is the Lehigh Valley Health Network. Also returning this year are The Bronx Wanderers, La Festa’s main act on Friday night at 7:30 p.m. Festival patrons will recall these talented guys from previous appearances.
