Misericordia University Pauly Friedman Art Gallery Opens New Exhibit Misericordia University’s Pauly Friedman Art Gallery exhibits “Personal to Political: Celebrating the African American Artists of Paulson Fontaine Press” through March 29, 2025. This exhibition features works by seventeen African American artists who have helped to shape the contemporary art conversation in the Bay Area and beyond. Works draw from history, traditional crafts, geography, and personal memory to show a variety and breadth of printmaking techniques. At the heart of this show is a Berkeley-based fine art print studio, Paulson Fontaine Press, who over the past two decades has developed an unparalleled roster of internationally celebrated artists, including Kerry James Marshall and the Gee’s Bend Quilters. The public is invited to explore these artworks through educational events. Three Pointer Art Talk: On Wednesday, February 19, 12:20 pm – 1:20 pm, three Misericordia professors will relate three works from the show to hot topics in their disciplines. Community-Created Installation: On Friday, February 21, 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm, volunteers are needed to help inflate and stack the 650 basketballs required to build David Huffman’s social sculpture installation, “Basketball Pyramid.” Gallery Talk and Reception, Three Pointer Art Talk: On Thursday, March 20, 4:30 pm – 6:15 pm, Lalaine B. Little, PhD, Gallery Director, will speak on the six prints in the exhibition based on quilt patterns by artisans from Gee’s Bend in Alabama. Marywood Features New Art Exhibit “Expand: Concepts of Space in the Maslow Collection” exhibit runs through October 18th. The Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art is currently featuring an art exhibit, “Expand Concepts of Space in the Maslow Collection,” which will run through October 18. In partnership with the School of Architecture’s Foundation Design course, this exhibition invites the viewer to explore the question, “What is space in artmaking?” Featuring a diverse selection of artists working primarily in abstraction, the exhibition examines how space is defined through techniques such as shaping, screening, layering, wrapping, and twisting. These works challenge and blur the boundaries between the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional, and encourage a deeper investigation into the nature of spatial perception itself. Featured artists include: Jurgen Albrecht, Alice Aycock, Robert Cumming, Aaron Fink, Peter Halley, Clint Jukkala, Denny Moers, Ad Reinhardt, Joel Shapiro, Anthony Sorce, Frank Stella, Ryan Ward, and Terry Winters. Marywood University Exploring Visual Language Exhibit An exhibit, Exploring Visual Language, is on view at The Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art, located in the Shields Center for Visual Arts on Marywood University’s campus, from April 11 – June 6, 2022. The exhibition considers that all artists, from early cave painters to contemporary artists, have used a visual language to express themselves. This language is ever evolving, complex, and simple; it has rules and no rules; it is as unique as one individual artist and it is universal. In conjunction with Professor Collier Parker’s Drawing and Painting classes, the Exploring Visual Language exhibit provides an opportunity to reflect on the many approaches to image making from representational, to abstract, to non-representational work, using many materials and all sizes. It is hoped that by studying these important works, students will expand their visual language and grow in their ability to express their vision. Featured artists include: Nicholas Africano, William Bailey, John Beerman, James Biederman, Sandro Chia, Chuck Close, Robert Cumming, Jim Dine, Al Held, Jasper Johns, David Salle, Robert Schultz, and Chihung Yang.
