Johnson College to Host Closer Look Event for Advanced Manufacturing Technology Johnson College is hosting a Closer Look event for its two-year Advanced Manufacturing Technology program on March 19, 2024, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on its Scranton campus. Prospective students can discuss the program, career opportunities, and the enrollment process with the College’s Enrollment team and Advanced Manufacturing Technology faculty while getting a glimpse at the industrial fabrication lab in action. Johnson College’s two-year Advanced Manufacturing Technology Associates Degree program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions within companies that have implemented team-oriented design, production, quality, and maintenance systems in modern manufacturing environments. Johnson College to Host Boy Scouts’ 25th Annual Merit Badge College Johnson College announced it will host over 150 Scouts during the Northeastern Pennsylvania Council, Boy Scouts of America 25th annual Merit Badge College on Saturday, January 27, 2024, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on its Scranton campus. Merit Badge College is a special advancement program available to all Northeastern Pennsylvania Scouts holding a rank of 1st class or above. Through the pre-registration process, scouts enrolled in one to four courses from a slate of over 30 different Merit Badge offerings, such as Automotive Maintenance, Electronics, Chemistry, Welding, Digital Technology, Woodwork, Citizenship, Business, Metalwork, and many more. The classes vary from 1 to 6 hours in length. They are facilitated by volunteers from Johnson College’s faculty, staff, and Boy Scout Leaders selected based on being accomplished professionals or experts in the specific field. Merit Badges are earned by Scouts only through the completion of designated prerequisites, active participation, and demonstrated knowledge of the specific material. This event helps Scouts gain understanding and make progress in their Scouting advancement. It also affords opportunities to meet other Scouts and adults throughout the area and get a real taste of a collegiate atmosphere.
Johnson College Receives Contribution from Fidelity Bank Johnson College received a $5,000 EITC contribution from Fidelity Bank to support students in the College’s Industry Fast Track Program. The Industry Fast Track Program (IFT) is a joint partnership with area school districts and the College. The program offers high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to simultaneously enroll in secondary and post-secondary coursework on the Johnson College campus. Students remain enrolled full-time at their high school while attending classes at Johnson College. Fidelity Bank’s contribution to Johnson College is part of Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) Program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development.
Johnson College Student Veteran Association Donates to Veteran’s Promise The Johnson College Student Veteran Association donated $500 to Veteran’s Promise on January 3, 2024, following an apparel fundraiser. The purpose of the fundraiser was to raise awareness among the College community for local organizations that support veterans throughout the region, including student veterans. Dr. Katie Leonard, Johnson College President & CEO, and Dr. Natalia Melgarejo, Johnson College Student Success Coordinator and Military and Veteran Services Liaison, visited Veteran’s Promise in Dickson City to tour the facility and present the donation. The 501©(3) organization advocates, educates, and raises awareness for all Veterans through outreach for PTSD, suicide prevention, drug and alcohol education, and supporting families of veterans throughout the region. During their visit, Dave Ragan, founder and president of Veteran’s Promise, shed some light on the impact of PTSD on veterans and families. The facility houses a wall of photos called the “Wall of Heroes,” which honors veterans who had made it home from the battlefield but took their lives on the home front. Dr. Melgarejo says that the College’s Student Veteran Association chose to donate to Veteran’s Promise to support the work they doing to help veterans in the region, including members of the Johnson College community.
Johnson College Now Enrolling in Continuing Education Welding Courses Johnson College’s Continuing Education Program is enrolling students in its Fundamentals of Welding and Intermediate Welding courses at the Scranton campus. The Fundamentals course will begin on January 18, 2024, followed by the intermediate course beginning on February 1, 2024. The Fundamentals of Welding and Intermediate Welding courses provide specific instruction in Oxy-Fuel, Gas Tungsten Arc (TIG, Gas Metal Arc (MIG), and Shielded Metal Arc (Stick) welding processes. The course consists of 40% theory and 60% hands-on practice. Additional lectures are given on basic metallurgy, welding codes, nondestructive examination, and welding symbols. The fundamentals course fee is $1,870 and includes a PPE kit. The intermediate course fee is $2,750 and includes certification testing fees. The courses can be bundled for a reduced cost of $4,251. Johnson College Receives Motorcycle Donation Johnson COllege of Technology: Total Control Motorcycle Training presented Johnson College with a 2000 Kawasaki Vulcan Motorcycle. The gift will benefit students of the College’s Continuing Education PA State Vehicle Safety Inspector course as well as the Automotive Technology program. It will primarily be used as a tool to administer the tactile test to students attempting to obtain their PA State Vehicle Safety Inspection license. Johnson College’s Pennsylvania State Vehicle Safety Inspection course consists of 12 classroom hours, a writing test, and a two-hour tactile test scheduled independently with the course instructor. Students who complete this course receive certification from PennDOT. The class size is limited to 12 students and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date of payment. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid operator’s license for each class of vehicle they intend to inspect. Classes are held at Johnson College’s Scranton campus in the Automotive Center of Weaver Hall. Johnson College to Host Transfer Day on December 14 Johnson College is holding a Transfer Day on Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on its campus in Scranton, PA. The College is encouraging current college students who are interested in changing the direction of their education and ultimately their career path to visit its campus. Students will meet with Enrollment, Financial Aid, Career Services, and Counseling and Disability Services representatives. In addition, staff members from the Registrar’s Office will be on hand for transfer credit analyses and to review potential schedules for the upcoming semester. Johnson College Enrolling Students in Forklift Operator Training Course Johnson College’s Continuing Education program is offering a Forklift Operator Training Course on Saturday, December 16, 2023, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Diesel Truck Technology Center on the College’s Scranton campus. The cost of the course is $200, but if you are a current Johnson College student or alum the cost is only $100. Space is limited! The forklift operator training is designed to familiarize students with OSHA Powered Industrial Truck Operator Training Requirements (29CFR Standard 1910.178 and ASME B56.1), provide current training requirements under the newly adopted standards, and assist participants in becoming an authorized operator of forklifts through theory and tactile testing. Nine hours of instruction including pre-operational inspection, picking up, traveling, and placing loads, parking procedures, refueling, and practical operation.
