Marywood University Art Galleries Announce Exhibits The exhibit, Printmaking: Art & Process will be on display in the Mahady Gallery, located on the campus of Marywood University, through October 23, 2021.The exhibit, “George Catlin – North American Indian Portfolio” will be on display in the Mahady Gallery, located on the campus of Marywood University, from November 6, 2021 through December 11, 2021. The Mahady Gallery, located in the Shields Center for Visual Arts on the campus of Marywood University is hosting two exhibits this fall: Printmaking: Art & Process, and George Catlin – North American Indian Portfolio. Fall 2021 gallery hours are Monday and Wednesday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 1-4 p.m. Both exhibits, as well as the gallery talk, are free and open to the public. Through October 23, 2021 Printmaking: Art & Process takes an educational approach showcasing the variety of printmaking and printing processes through a collection of privately owned prints from various artists, posters and student and faculty work. Works selected drop a wide net over the traditional printmaking to commercial offset printing. Sub-categories include social issue posters, works from a print portfolio exchange and a display of tools to help explain the process. November 6, 2021 – December 11, 2021 “George Catlin – North American Indian Portfolio,” will feature 31 hand-colored prints by American Artist and Author, George Catlin. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, his paintings of Native American scenes have become an invaluable record of Native American culture in the 19th century. Marywood University Ranks as Best Value Among Northeast PA Colleges in Ranking Marywood University offers the “Best Value” among Northeast Pennsylvania Universities, according to the 2022 U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges ranking. Marywood was also the highest ranked of only two local institutions included in U.S. News “Best Colleges for Veterans” category and the highest-ranked local institution for the “Top Performers in Social Media” category. At #25 of the regional universities (North) ranked for “Best Value,” Marywood ranked the highest of the three local four-year private colleges included in this category. According to U.S. News, the “Best Value” ranking considers a school’s academic quality. The higher the quality of the program and the lower the cost, the better the deal. Only schools ranked in or near the top half of their categories are included, because U.S. News considers the most significant values to be among colleges that are above average academically. Marywood University, which ranked #44 overall on the “Best Regional Universities North” list, also was the highest-ranked local university in the “Top Performers in Social Media” category at #72. Marywood University to Host Annual Lackawanna County College Fair Marywood University will host the Annual Lackawanna County College Fair on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, from 7-8:30 p.m., in the Center for Athletics and Wellness on the University’s Campus. Prior to the College Fair, a Higher Education Presentation will take place at 6:15 p.m., and a Financial Aid Presentation will take place at 7:15 p.m., both at the Swartz Center for Spiritual Life in the McGowan Community Room. This event and the presentations are free and open to the public. Marywood to Offer Free, Confidential Depression Screenings Marywood University’s Psychological Services Center (PSC) will offer free and confidential depression screenings as part of National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, October 7, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Psychological Services Center, located in the McGowan Center for Professional Studies. No appointment is necessary, the screenings are free and open to the public, and people of all ages are welcome. Held annually, National Depression Screening Day (NDSD) raises awareness and screens people for depression and related mood and anxiety disorders. The screenings are anonymous and confidential, and no commitment is necessary. Treatment options for depression will be offered. Marywood University Professor Receives Second Fulbright Specialist Award Sister Angela Kim IHM, Ph.D., Full Professor, Director of the School of Social Work, and Director of MSW Program at Marywood University, received her second Fulbright Specialist Award to Poland from the William J. Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board. She will complete a project that aims to exchange knowledge and establish partnerships benefiting participants, institutions, and communities both in the U.S. and overseas through a variety of educational and training activities within the field of social work at the Rzeszow University of Technology in Poland. She is one of over 400 U.S. citizens who share expertise abroad through the Fulbright Specialist Program, which operates in over 160 countries worldwide each year. Recipients are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, demonstrated leadership in their field, and their potential to foster long-term cooperation between institutions in the U.S. and abroad. Marywood University to Offer Professional Continuing Education Nursing Home Administration Program Marywood University’s Professional Continuing Education department will offer a 120-Hour Long-Term Care Nursing Home Administration (NHA) and Refresher Program during the fall 2021/spring 2022 academic semesters. Each of the sixteen courses is approved for 7.5 continuing education hours by the Pennsylvania State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators. Chamber Music Festival at Marywood University Marywood University’s music, theatre, and dance department will present a three-day Chamber Music Festival, September 24, 25,and 26. This festival, given by professional chamber musicians, is being presented as a “Welcome back to live performances festival” for the greater Scranton community. All concerts will be held in the Marian Chapel, Swartz Center, at Marywood University and are free and open to the public. Marywood’s Communication Sciences and Disorders Department Notes 100 Percent Pass Rate & Gold Chapter Honors Marywood University’s Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) recently garnered two noteworthy accolades, including a perfect pass rate on the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology by its recent graduates and Gold Chapter Honors by its campus chapter of the National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA). Both are repeat, multi-year accomplishments for program graduates and students. The 2021 graduating class from the Master of Science program in Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) achieved 100 percent pass rate on the National Examination in Speech-Language Pathology, which is required for certification as a speech-language pathologist by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and licensure in all states. The CSD Department currently has a multi-year average of 100 percent for passing the National Examination of its SLP graduates within one year of graduation. The National NSSLHA Executive Council recently informed the Marywood NSSLHA Chapter that the chapter had once again earned Gold Chapter Honors, with this most recent honor occurring during the 2020-2021 academic year. Chapters who earn Gold Honors are credited for “increasing awareness of communication disorders among state and federal legislators and across communities; supporting clients, students, and organizations in their community; creating vibrant online conversations in the NSSLHA Community; providing monetary donations to support various organizations in the community and scholarships for students in CSD programs.” This past year, the Marywood NSSLHA Chapter provided monetary donations and community service to the Alzheimer’s Association. Donations were also made to the Pacer Pantry, and service was provided throughout the community. Andrea Novak, associate professor of practice in the CSD Department and faculty advisor for the Marywood NSSLHA Chapter, stated, “Our students go above and beyond to provide service, whether it be on Marywood’s campus or in the community. They are such a unique group of individuals who are always looking for ways to serve.” Marywood’s NSSLHA chapter consists of approximately 50 student members from the undergraduate CSD and graduate SLP programs.
