String Fling Returns to the Scranton Cultural Center on April 8 Featuring an All Acoustic Evening with Mike Miz & Good Company! The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple announces a retooled String Fling, offering an all-acoustic evening with Mike Miz on April 8 at 7 PM. This is a one-night stop from Nashville for Mike Miz, who hasn’t performed in NEPA since the fall. Since signing with 3 Electric Records, Mike Miz has been gaining speed with such new single releases as “Virginia” and “High for Now.” As described by Rolling Stone Magazine, the song “Virginia” is a “monster of a jam rocker that like the Stones did decades before him, pins an irresistible melody to one of Rock’s most pined after three syllable names.” Along with Michael Borowski on piano and Stephen Kurtz on upright bass, Miz will bring an old-time country Americana feel to his set similar to what audiences might see in Nashville. The remaining lineup includes star-studded locals such as Bret Alexander (The Badlees) joined by friends Tim & Rob Husty, AJ Jump and special guest, Ellie Rose. Bret is also no stranger to large-scale touring and recording success with many years with the Badlees whose nationally acclaimed hits are “Angeline is Coming Home,” “Fear of Falling” and “Gwendolyn.” Roy Williams (South Side Five, Bog Swing, Fiddle Tamers, Human Hands) will be accompanied by Shawn Caden as they debut their new duo, Big Leaf; with music made for guitar and mandolin. Opening the show is one of the region’s favorite singers/songwriters and storytellers, Dave Brown (Dishonest Fiddlers) who recently moved to the Harrisburg area. The program is designed to be a special intimate “unplugged” version of some of the area’s favorite rockers as they perform mixed sets of original music, folklore and more. However, both got their start as comedians and are excited to return to their funny-bone-tickling roots. Jeff B. Davis is also a highly experienced improv comedian and starred in the cult classic cartoon series, “Harmonquest.” He has also starred in “Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show” and “Improv-a-Ganza,” while gaining fame for his spot-on impressions of Christoper Walken, Keanu Reeves, and Jeff Goldblum. Joel Murray is the youngest of the nine Murray brothers, including Bill Murray, but has become a star in his own right. Winter Blues Guitarmageddon Blues Festival Returns, Blues Legend Joe Louis Walker Set to Headline on February 25 The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple is pleased to announce that its 6th Annual Winter Blues Guitarmageddon will return on February 25 and continue as a one-night Blues festival featuring an eclectic mix of local, regional, national, and international touring artists. Grammy-nominated, six-time Blues Music Award Winner and Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, Joe Louis Walker is confirmed to headline. “We are beyond excited to be back this year as a one-night mini-fest, with plans of expanding to a weekend event in 2023,” says organizer Maria Santomauro. “The last two years were challenging, but we are grateful to be back presenting live music to the greater Northeastern Pennsylvania regions again!” Boasting a career that spans over 50 years, Headliner Joe Louis Walker is regarded by NPR as a “legendary boundary pushing icon of modern blues” and is a true guitar powerhouse with distinctive vocals. He has toured the world’s most renowned music festivals sharing the stage with Muddy Waters, Thelonious Monk, Ronnie Woods, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Charlie Musselwhite and John Mayall, to name a few. In addition to his own twenty-five albums, Walker has played on Grammy-winning records by B.B. King and James Cotton and collaborated with a diverse group of first-rate artists including Branford Marsalis, Tower of Power, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. His latest album “Electric Electric,” features a diverse mix of blues-stomping and horn-powered originals as well as a few out of the ordinary covers, like “Werewolves of London” (Warren Zevon) and “Hotel California” (The Eagles). Adding to the lineup is King Solomon Hicks, who returns by popular demand after his debut in Scranton at Winter Blues Guitarmageddon: Next Generation in February 2020. The Scranton Cultural Center Presents FREE Concert Enjoy a concert given by the United States Air Force Heritage of America Concert Band at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple on February 13 at 2:00 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. For eight decades, the USAF Heritage of America Concert Band has educated, inspired and entertained over 1.5 million people annually, by providing music for events that support Airmen and their families, honor our Nation’s veterans and build relationships of trust between the American people and their Air Force. The Concert Band is comprised of over 40 professional Airman-musicians who captivate audiences on regular tours throughout the East Coast with a variety of renditions of great orchestral classics, marches, Broadway hits, jazz standards, movie music and patriotic favorites.
