String Fling Returns to the Scranton Cultural Center on April 8 Featuring an All Acoustic Evening with Mike Miz & Good Company!

The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple announces a retooled String Fling, offering an all-acoustic evening with Mike Miz on April 8 at 7 PM. This is a one-night stop from Nashville for Mike Miz, who hasn’t performed in NEPA since the fall.

Since signing with 3 Electric Records, Mike Miz has been gaining speed with such new single releases as “Virginia” and “High for Now.” As described by Rolling Stone Magazine, the song “Virginia” is a “monster of a jam rocker that like the Stones did decades before him, pins an irresistible melody to one of Rock’s most pined after three syllable names.”

Along with Michael Borowski on piano and Stephen Kurtz on upright bass, Miz will bring an old-time country Americana feel to his set similar to what audiences might see in Nashville.

The remaining lineup includes star-studded locals such as Bret Alexander (The Badlees) joined by friends Tim & Rob Husty, AJ Jump and special guest, Ellie Rose. Bret is also no stranger to large-scale touring and recording success with many years with the Badlees whose nationally acclaimed hits are “Angeline is Coming Home,” “Fear of Falling” and “Gwendolyn.”

Roy Williams (South Side Five, Bog Swing, Fiddle Tamers, Human Hands) will be accompanied by Shawn Caden as they debut their new duo, Big Leaf; with music made for guitar and mandolin.

Opening the show is one of the region’s favorite singers/songwriters and storytellers, Dave Brown (Dishonest Fiddlers) who recently moved to the Harrisburg area.

The program is designed to be a special intimate “unplugged” version of some of the area’s favorite rockers as they perform mixed sets of original music, folklore and more.

The concert will take place in the Scranton Cultural Center’s Shopland Hall on the fourth floor at 7:00 p.m. with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Seating is general admission and tickets are $28.25 in advance and $38.25 day of show. Both cabaret-style seating and bench seating will be available. Tickets can be purchased at the Fidelity Bank Box Office at the SCC in person or by calling (570) 344-1111, or via Ticketmaster.

String Fling is sponsored by Toyota of Scranton, UGI Utilities, Inc., The Hilton Scranton & Conference Center and LT Verrastro. It is supported by Lackawanna County and the PA Council on the Arts.

Improv at the Scranton Cultural Center

WHO: Martin Media

WHAT: Whose Live Anyway?

WHEN: Friday, April 29 at 8:00 p.m.

WHERE: Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple – Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Theatre 420 North Washington Avenue Scranton, PA 18503

TICKET PRICE: $46.00-56.00 (plus fees)

The current cast members of the Emmy-nominated TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” are proud to present their new improv tour: “WHOSE LIVE ANYWAY?,” appearing live in concert at the Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple on April 29 at 8:00 PM.

“WHOSE LIVE ANYWAY?” is 90 minutes of hilarious improvised comedy and song all based on audience suggestions. Cast members Greg Proops, Jeff B. Davis, Ryan Stiles, and Joel Murray will leave you gasping with the very witty scenes they invent before your eyes. Audience participation is key to the show, so bring your suggestions and you might be asked to join the cast onstage!

This particular style of improvisational comedy is rife with countless gags, one-liners, hilarious games and even songs so good you will hardly believe they were made up on the spot. The teamwork and trust that it takes to perform a show with no script is apparent, but when the best of the best do it, they do it effortlessly. Watch them build entire scenes, characters, and storylines right before your eyes as they take you on a white-knuckle ride through endless chuckles.

Ryan Stiles’ television credits include roles on “The Drew Carey Show” and “Two and a Half Men,” while Greg Proops has lent his vocal talents to animated characters in Star Wars: Episode 1, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Brother Bear. However, both got their start as comedians and are excited to return to their funny-bone-tickling roots.

Jeff B. Davis is also a highly experienced improv comedian and starred in the cult classic cartoon series, “Harmonquest.” He has also starred in “Drew Carey’s Green Screen Show” and “Improv-a-Ganza,” while gaining fame for his spot-on impressions of Christoper Walken, Keanu Reeves, and Jeff Goldblum.

Joel Murray is the youngest of the nine Murray brothers, including Bill Murray, but has become a star in his own right. Though he has over 250 sitcom appearances, he is best known for his recurring roles like Freddy Rumsen on “Mad Men” and Eddie Jackson on “Shameless.” He has also appeared in One Crazy Summer, The Artist, Scrooged, and Bobcat Goldthwait’s God Bless America..

WHOSE LIVE ANYWAY? showcases some of the improv games made famous on the long-running TV show as well as some exciting new ones, featuring musical direction by Bob Derkach. All ages welcome.

Tickets for “WHOSE LIVE ANYWAY?” will be on sale on February 24 at 10:00 AM. Tickets range from $46-56 (plus fees) and are available for purchase at the Fidelity Bank Box Office at the SCC in person or by calling (570) 344-1111, or via Ticketmaster. The Scranton Cultural Center at the Masonic Temple is pleased to announce that its 6th Annual Winter Blues Guitarmageddon will return on February 25 and continue as a one-night Blues festival featuring an eclectic mix of local, regional, national, and international touring artists. Grammy-nominated, six-time Blues Music Award Winner and Blues Hall of Fame Inductee, Joe Louis Walker is confirmed to headline.

“We are beyond excited to be back this year as a one-night mini-fest, with plans of expanding to a weekend event in 2023,” says organizer Maria Santomauro. “The last two years were challenging, but we are grateful to be back presenting live music to the greater Northeastern Pennsylvania regions again!”

Boasting a career that spans over 50 years, Headliner Joe Louis Walker is regarded by NPR as a “legendary boundary pushing icon of modern blues” and is a true guitar powerhouse with distinctive vocals. He has toured the world’s most renowned music festivals sharing the stage with Muddy Waters, Thelonious Monk, Ronnie Woods, John Lee Hooker, Willie Dixon, Charlie Musselwhite and John Mayall, to name a few.

King and James Cotton and collaborated with a diverse group of first-rate artists including Branford Marsalis, Tower of Power, Bonnie Raitt, Buddy Guy, Taj Mahal, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown. His latest album “Electric Electric,” features a diverse mix of blues-stomping and horn-powered originals as well as a few out of the ordinary covers, like “Werewolves of London” (Warren Zevon) and “Hotel California” (The Eagles).

Adding to the lineup is King Solomon Hicks, who returns by popular demand after his debut in Scranton at Winter Blues Guitarmageddon: Next Generation in February 2020. At that time, he was just releasing his latest work “Harlem”, which was awarded Best Emerging Artist Album at the Blues Music Awards. The album was produced by three-time Grammy Winner Kirk Yano, who has worked with Miles Davis, Public Enemy, Mariah Carey and more.

Rounding out the lineup are local blues rock power trio Dustin Douglas & The Electric Gentlemen and the soulful, Philadelphia-based Deb Callahan Duo featuring Allen James.
